The Virgin of Humility (c. 1425) is one of Fra Angelico’s most emblematic works. It belongs to the collection of the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, on deposit at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC).

On the occasion of the research and restoration project of this magnificent panel at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, Albayalde has provided a technical consultancy service, consisting of the study and definition of the gilding techniques, in collaboration with the restoration and materials analysis department of the centre.

Fra Angelico demonstrates great virtuosity in the gilding techniques used in this painting, both in terms of the high quality of the execution and the variety of techniques used: burnished surfaces, matt gilding, carved and punched fields, inscriptions, glazes in various tones and gradations, etc.
